Our driver was really just transportation up to Chateauneuf Du Pape. She didn’t share too much about the region or the wine, a little disappointing. The two wineries we visited were great, though we waited 25 minutes for the first one to be available. After it was over, I felt like we could have done this ourself really.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The largest and most important appellation in the southern Rhône, with more than 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 80 growers, Châteauneuf-du-Pape produces more wine than the whole of the northern Rhône combined. The gloriously rich red wines, redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, are enhanced by the

Yield control is intimately connected with the resulting quality of wine with yields below 35 hl/ha (2 tons/acre), such as those practiced by many Châteauneuf-du-Pape estates, producing very different wines to those with yields closer to 50 hl/ha (5 tons/acre) which is the base yield for Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) wines labeled

In 1937, the union of the owners of the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, then chaired by Baron Pierre Le Roy Boiseaumarié, actually created an original bottle: the famous bottle with the embossed logo. This logo symbolizes a papal tiara placed above the keys of St. Peter with the inscription: "Châteauneuf-du-Pape contrôlé" written in
Rayas shone particularly brightly in 2016, says Matt Walls. Credit: Ian Shaw / Alamy. Wines from the the Southern Rhône 2016 should have the ability to live long in the cellar, so here are the top wines rated by Matt Walls. Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2016 red wines have a ‘remarkable density of ripe tannins’ and are, unsurprisingly, among the

That is fine as this is more than balanced out due to the early drinkability of most Chateauneuf du Pape wine. Close to 95% of the production of Chateauneuf du Pape is devoted to the production of red wine. About 5% of Chateauneuf du Pape is devoted making white Chateauneuf du Pape wine.
With 14.5% alcohol it is beefy stuff though, that fluffy sweetness suggested by the nose giving way to a palate with much more muscle and structure, the tannins and stripe of chicory acidity giving a savoury finish. 88-89/100. £13.50, Asda. Wm Morrison, Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011, France
4) Domaine du Vieux Lazaret. A well priced Chateauneuf du Pape by one of the largest vineyards in the region. This has a warm nose with complex red fruits, leather, and spice. And on the palate, it is rich and complex with a classic balanced structure and flavors of red cherry, blackberry, plum, leather, and spice. Deep, full-bodied, and dense, with sweet tannin, this explosively rich Chateauneuf is a stronger effort than the 2005, 2004, or 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. A fantastic wine, the 2006 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape fleshes out with air and displays deep, earthy aromatics of dark fruit, roasted meat, graphite, mushroom and

The wine of Chateauneuf-du-Pape takes its name from the relocation of the papal court to Avignon. The lore says that after moving in 1309, Pope Clément V (after whom Chateau Pape-Clément in Pessac-Léognan is named) ordered that vines were planted. But it was actually his successor, John XXII, who established the vineyards.
